How to Perform Adult CPR: 5 Key Steps

Knowing how to perform adult CPR means you can act with confidence until paramedics arrive. When a heart stops, every minute without CPR lowers the chance of survival. This guide covers the key steps. Nothing replaces hands-on training with a certified instructor.

1. Check the scene and the person

Make sure the area is safe. Tap the person on the shoulders and shout. If they do not respond and are not breathing normally, act at once.

2. Call 9-1-1 and get an AED

Call 9-1-1, or ask someone nearby to call. Send another person to find an automated external defibrillator (AED). Many public places have one.

3. Start chest compressions

Place the heel of one hand on the centre of the chest. Put your other hand on top. Push hard and fast. Aim for about 100 to 120 compressions each minute. Press down at least 5 cm (2 inches). Let the chest rise fully between presses.

4. Use the AED as soon as it arrives

Turn it on and follow the voice prompts. Attach the pads to the bare chest. Make sure nobody touches the person while the AED checks the heart. It will tell you if a shock is needed.

5. Keep going until help takes over

Continue CPR until paramedics arrive. You can also stop if the person starts to breathe normally. Take turns with another rescuer if you can, because compressions are tiring.

Why hands-on training matters

Reading about CPR is a good start. Practising on a manikin is better. It builds the muscle memory you need in a real emergency. An instructor can also correct your hand position, depth and speed.
