AED Basics: What Every Workplace Should Know

These AED basics will help your workplace be ready for sudden cardiac arrest. An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a portable device that can restart a heart. Modern AEDs are made for anyone to use. That is why having one at work can save a life.

How an AED works

When you turn an AED on, it gives clear voice instructions. You attach two pads to the person’s bare chest. The device checks the heart rhythm. Then it tells you if a shock is needed. It will not give a shock unless one is advised.

Using an AED safely

  • Call 9-1-1 and start chest compressions while someone brings the AED.
  • Dry the chest if it is wet. Remove any medication patches.
  • Place the pads as shown on the pads or the device.
  • Make sure nobody touches the person during checks and shocks.
  • Restart CPR straight after a shock, unless the device says otherwise.

Where should AEDs be placed?

Keep your AED in a visible place that is easy to reach. Add clear signs so people can find it fast. Make sure your staff know where it is. Check the battery and pads often, using the maker’s instructions.

Why AED training matters

An AED is simple to use. Still, people feel calmer when they have practised. Training helps staff act quickly. It also teaches how to combine the AED with good chest compressions.

Train your team

Our CPR courses include AED training for adult, child and infant casualties. Your team learns the steps on real equipment. They gain the confidence to act under pressure.

Quick summary

An AED is safe and simple. It talks you through each step. It only gives a shock when one is needed. Place it where everyone can see it. Train your team so they know what to do. Every second counts in a cardiac emergency.
