Your first aid and CPR certificate shows that you have the skills to respond in an emergency. But how long does it last? And when should you renew it? Here is what you need to know.
How long a certificate is valid
Lifesaver 101 certificates are valid for 3 years. Pulse Savers courses lead to these certificates. Lifesaver 101 also recommends re-certifying every year. CPR skills fade fast without practice, and guidelines can change.
Why refresh sooner than required
- Skills fade. Compression depth and speed get less accurate over time.
- Guidelines change. Our courses follow the ILCOR 2016 consensus guidelines for CPR. They are also WSIB Regulation 1101 compliant.
- Confidence matters. Regular practice helps you act quickly instead of freezing.
Upgrading a course
Yes. A CPR Level C course can be upgraded to Level HCP (BLS) when you register. This helps if your role changes and needs healthcare provider skills.
How renewal works
Renewal uses the same simple blended process. First, complete the theory online at your own pace. Then attend a hands-on session in class. An instructor reviews your skills and answers your questions.
Renewing as a team
Many employers renew their whole team on one date. It keeps everyone current and makes tracking easy. Group and student discounts are available, so ask us when you book.

Quick summary
Your certificate lasts 3 years. A yearly refresh keeps your skills sharp. Renewal is quick and uses the same blended format. Teams can renew together. Book early, so nobody lets their certificate expire and your workplace stays covered.
Where to learn more
You can read about every course on our courses page. Each course lists its price, outline and who it suits. You can also call our team with any question. We are open 9am to 6:30pm, seven days a week, and we are glad to help.
A note for employers
If you manage a team, put renewal dates in your calendar. Ask each person for their certificate date. Plan group sessions a few weeks before the dates arrive. This keeps your workplace covered and your records in order.
