Recognize the Signs

The first step in responding to a choking emergency is recognizing the signs. If someone is choking, they may clutch their throat, have difficulty breathing, or be unable to speak. Their face may turn blue due to lack of oxygen. It's crucial to stay vigilant and assess the situation promptly.

Heimlich Maneuver technique

Perform the first aid for choking

Abdominal-Thrusts is a well-known technique for clearing a blocked airway. To perform it, stand behind the choking person and place your arms around their waist. Make a fist with one hand and position it just above their navel, thumb side in. Grasp your fist with your other hand and deliver quick, upward thrusts. The goal is to force air from the lungs to dislodge the obstruction. Continue until the object is expelled or the person can breathe again.

Back Blows technique

Back Blows and Abdominal Thrusts for Infants and Pregnant Individuals

For infants (less than one-year-old) and pregnant individuals, abdominal thrusts may not be suitable. Instead, use back blows and chest thrusts. For infants, support their head and neck and deliver five back blows followed by five chest thrusts. For pregnant individuals, place your hands higher on the chest during abdominal thrusts to avoid the uterus.

911 call

Call for Help

Even if you successfully clear the obstruction, it's essential to call for medical assistance immediately. Choking can cause internal injuries or complications that may not be immediately apparent. Paramedics can provide further evaluation and care if necessary.

Choking emergencies can happen unexpectedly, but your knowledge of these first aid techniques can be a lifesaver. Recognize the signs of choking, perform the Heimlich maneuver or appropriate techniques for specific cases, and always seek professional medical help.
